Relationship Expectations

Take your understanding and expectations of a relationship to another level

Since the end of World War 2 the nature and expectations of relationships has changed dramatically. Over that 70 year period there have been pivotal points that have defined our understanding of the way single people come together to form relationships and find a significant other.

In immediate Post war period in the western world there was a need reinforce a traditional family model. The concept of the nuclear family was reinforced and anything alternative to that was never consider as an option. However as the world moved into the 60s things began to change the children of post war adults began to question the values of their parents. At this time the hippy generation experimented with the way relationships formed. Throughout the 70s and the 80s with the advent of the womens movement and the acceptance of gay relationships the sense of what is a normal relationship became increasingly challenged.

With this evolution comes for many people confusion and dissatisfaction with the relationships that they form. The statistics related to marriage and breakdowns would suggest that there is nothing permanent about getting into a relationship with another person. When permanency and longevity was seen to be the measure of a successful relationship

Over the last couple of decades with the introduction of the internet and online dating the rules have changed again. The ability to find a partner is relatively easy and yet the extent to which that potential partner meets your personal criteria is again problematic. So what does a single person do when looking for a partner and what does a couple do when their relationship is under pressure.

There have been many theorists writers and therapists write about what it takes to be in a relationship.
